Looking in from the left side immediately below the air filter housing, locate the shock's upper mounting bolt nut (clearly seen in this photo below) Use your 17mm socket and your 6" extension to remove. Use a second 17mm socket and extension (or wrench, whichever), to hold the right side of the bolt from turning while you loosen this nut.

Here is that same upper mounting bolt looking in from the right side of the bike. Note how far the dark green collar emerges from the mounting fixture for future reference. Note the bolt head you must hold fast while removing the nut on the other end (you ABS guys won't have a nice open field of view like this, as the ABS modulator and associated plumbing normally resides in this area).

With the upper mounting bolt nut removed, this is the point you want to place a block of wood under the rearmost portion of the driveshaft housing to gently "lift" the swingarm to relieve tension on the upper mounting bolt, as seen below:

You don't have to lift the swingarm very much; just enough to relieve tension on the upper mounting bolt, whereupon you can slide it out with your fingers as seen below. Note how the green collar came out a little bit from its recess; no biggie, just push it back in place. This is a pretty stout bolt, isn't it?

Now you can pull the shock's upper mounting collar completely free of the mounting flanges, as seen below. At this time, remove the two preload cables from their two plastic retaining clips (the cables run along *underneath* the adjacent cross member panel; yellow arrow points to one of these two plastic clips).
