SW-FOG Routes Day 1: Albuquerque to Taos

Courtesy of Doc Reid with help from Steve Goatley

1.- Right on Lomas Blvd (the road in front of Applebee’s) to to Juan Tabo Blvd. Turn right on Juan Tabo to I-40. East on I-40 to Tijeras then North on 14 to the Sandia Peak turnoff. Ride up the Crest road to either the Sandia Ski Area (8 mi.) or the Crest (14 mi.) at 10,400' elevation. Breath up there. The air's thin. Also be mindful of LEOs with radar. They're less likely to be there on Friday morning but consider riding behind someone with a detector.

2. - Come back down the Crest Road and head North on 14 again to Madrid. Some of the Wild Hogs movie was filmed in Madrid. Depending on the time we might stop at the cafe they built for the movie and have breakfast. Then it's on to Santa Fe.

3.- Highway 14 becomes Cerillos Road as we come into Santa Fe. We'll avoid town (bad traffic) by heading south on I-25 a very short bit and get off on the bypass route that'll take us around and outside of Santa Fe. Keep on this until you curve back onto 84/284 to Pojoaque.

4.- Still on 84.just past Pojoaque you'll come to a light and Rte 503 to Nambe. Take that right. This route will take up up through the following villages:

  • Chimayo
  • Truchas
  • Penasco
  • Placitas
  • Talpa
  • Ranchos de Taos. The San Francisco church is world-renowned for its adobe architecture.

Continue on Hwy 60 to Taos. Kachina Lodge is on the right hand side as you're leaving town on Hwy 68 on the way out to Taos. If you spot Michael's Kitchen (home of the best Huevos Rancheros in NM), then the Kachina's just up the road and on the right hand side. We may set up a dinner at the Kachina and if so will update you at dinner Thursday eve in Albuquerque.

Have fun and be careful out there!!

Mileage to major destinations:

Alb to Madrid via Sandia Crest - 61 mi.

Madrid to Santa Fe-- 28 mi.

Santa Fe to Taos via the High Road -- ~85 mi.
